Hundreds of mobile ringtones scrapped

Songwriters sick of the sound of their music when they're turned into mobile phone jingles are trying to stop their tunes being used.
EMI, one of the biggest record companies in the world, has ordered ringtone providers to stop converting and selling 300 hit pop songs, TV themes and film tunes.

The list includes the theme tunes from X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Trek.

The record giants say they're doing it for the artists, and have come up with a long list of jingles they want removed from catalogues.

But James Winsoar, founder of one of the biggest ringtone providers says it'll be musicians who miss out as they won't get the money from providers for using their music.

Music publishers get a tenth of the money people pay when they download a tune, so they make between 10p and 30p per download.
